Our Story

Handkraftz was started in 2004 by a group of designers who had interacted closely with artisans and craftsmen in India and realized that centuries old craft techniques were dying because the craftsmen were not able to earn basic minimum wages by producing their craft.

Our journey started nearly fifteen ago when we realized that traditional crafts (or folk arts) in India, some of which had nearly 5000-year-old foundations, and no written documentation, were dying at the hands of mass production, which was the new fetish of the local population. Though handmade items were appreciated globally, they were available only in high street stores and their production was based more on designer demand. This did not generate enough income for the artisans, or their future generations, most of whom live in rural India, to continue with the craft. Most families were thus migrating to cities to take up menial jobs to make ends meet.

To obviate this and empower the artisans we decided help them sell their products at fair prices and without the involvement of any middlemen.

Each of our products is handcrafted. Sequence work is done by hand; embroidery is done on manually operated embroidery machines; durries are woven on a hand loom; dyes are prepared from vegetable colors and hand-mixed; ceramic products are hand thrown and hand carved. A lot of pieces are one of a kind. Consistency and uniformity, found in mass produced industrialized goods will be missing in handcrafted art works. But therein lies the beauty of these products: the artisans try and improvise on every piece. The subtle variations in the color, shape, design, and texture make all pieces exceptional.

Handkraftz has a Twofold Mission:

  • - To conserve the local craft which has been around for centuries and provide a sustainable livelihood for the artisans and their families
  • - To directly connect the artisans with the consumer so that the artisans can reach a much larger audience and high-quality hand-crafted products are made available to the consumer without the high street mark ups.

Working towards these goals has other related benefits as well:

  • - Since most of the artisans are women, this helps women become earners thereby getting respect and a say in their family and community. Empowering women enables young girls to get education and get employment.
  • - Promotion of local crafts reduce the use of harmful synthetic raw materials such as plastic and paints that pollute our environment.

Handkraftz has the unique distinction of being a global platform started in India, by locals, who not only understood the craft and the language but also could differentiate between an artisan and a trader. Our organization is a collaboration where each individual artisan or artisan cooperative is working towards a sustainable living within their local surroundings and the wages they earn from their arts are focused towards those.

While we pay artisans either in advance or immediately upon delivery of products, most other organizations selling hand crafted products, either source from factories employing artisans on daily wages or purchase on credit from artisans or traders and pay them only once the product is sold.

Our product line gives you the opportunity to buy exclusive handcrafted products, most of which are not even available in the Indian retail market itself. The huge cost involved in sourcing these products directly from India does not make it commercially viable for wholesale buyers to buy small quantities and you may not find them in the local market, though we've seen similar products available at high street store in New York at nearly four times the price.

You can help the artisan community not only by buying our products but also recommending us to friends and family. With each sold product the artisans’ faith in themselves and their craft is reinforced, and the next generation feels it worthwhile to continue with the craft.

By buying these products you are not only aiding and encouraging the growth, revival and contemporizing of the traditional handmade crafts, but also re iterating your commitment towards a more sustainable, less industrialized world.
